Where Black Women study the brilliance of their Black Girlhood through the study of art
ABOUT US
Black Girl Saturday School® is the place where the study of Black girls’ and women’s lives is valued, appreciated, cultivated, immersive, healing, restorative, grounding, available, continual, fun, and more.
Black Girl Saturday School® is a space for Black Women:
- to safely and with care, journey back to their Black Girlhood with the expectation of finding brilliance
- to freely explore and reflect on our sensual lives through language, history, art, and culture
- to cultivate a personal wisdom that we can activate in our day-to-day lives
Black Girl(hood): The Anthology
Black Girl Saturday School® is an immersive experience where grown women courageously journey back to their girlhood seeking their brilliance through the study of art. We study the language, history, and culture of Black Girlhood as a way of identifying, naming, reclaiming, and honoring those sensual parts of ourselves that we knew then, and still know now.
Once we’ve taken that journey back to our girlhood – which can oftentimes be daunting, or joyous, or wild – we arrive back to our womanhood with a deeper, more sophisticated knowing of who we are and who we have always been. This time, however, we stand in the fullness of our sensual selves minus the gaudy adornments placed on us by society, religion, family, classism, etc., and on and on and on.
And after we’ve placed our sacred girlhood at the center of our study, by remembering lyrics from a favorite song and what part of our soul those lyrics touch, or by reminiscing on the types of relationships or scenarios we promised ourselves we would never be in, we accept that holy and cathartic assignment of storytelling. This anthology is a manifestation of those stories of wisdom and intelligence and brilliance that was almost abandoned in our girlhood. But these women knew better: they redeemed their brilliance.

The Jam Session
The Jam Session is a one time event where we gather to explore and celebrate current events that have an impact on Black women and girls. Jam Sessions are the perfect way for newcomers to learn more about what Black Girl Saturday School® is all about! Jam Sessions are open to all women and girls: Tell your mama, bring a friend.
The Study
The Study is a 4-week session where we delve deeply into the work, life, and/or specific contribution(s) of a particular Black woman. We study her craft and her impact on Black girlhood and womanhood. While in deep study, we reflect on how this woman and her work has shaped our experience(s) coming of age as Black women and girls.
The Workshop
The Workshop is the most personal and philosophical of our sessions. We take a theme relevant to Black girlhood and womanhood and study how that theme plays out in our lives. In a workshop, the participant is the subject. We question, we interrogate. We find the jewels in our experiences and use them to redefine and reconnect with the woman in the mirror.
