Our Story
Black Girl Saturday School® is an immersive experience where grown women courageously journey back to their girlhood seeking their brilliance through the study of art. We study the language, history, and culture of Black Girlhood as a way of identifying, naming, reclaiming, and honoring those sensual parts of ourselves that we knew then, and still know now.
Once we’ve taken that journey back to our girlhood – which can oftentimes be daunting, or joyous, or wild – we arrive back to our womanhood with a deeper, more sophisticated knowing of who we are and who we have always been. This time, however, we stand in the fullness of our sensual selves minus the gaudy adornments placed on us by society, religion, family, classism, etc., and on and on and on.
And after we’ve placed our sacred girlhood at the center of our study, by remembering lyrics from a favorite song and what part of our soul those lyrics touch, or by reminiscing on the types of relationships and scenarios we promised ourselves we would (or would never) be in, we accept that holy and cathartic assignment of storytelling. This space - Black Girl Saturday School® - is a manifestation of those stories of wisdom and intelligence and brilliance that we almost abandoned in our girlhood. But you know better. You know there is brilliance to be redeemed. That’s why you’re here and we’re glad you came.
